As Federal Government Creates New Path to Restore Gun Rights, Public Safety Must Remain the Priority

NEVADA - Yesterday, newly confirmed Attorney General Todd Blanche announced that the Justice Department finalized a new rule change that allows individuals with criminal convictions to apply to restore their Second Amendment rights. This new process circumvents the previous pathway to restore rights by creating an online portal system individuals can use to apply for right restoration.

Shelbie Swartz, Executive Director of Institute for a Progressive Nevada, issued the following statement:

“Restoring a constitutional right is a serious responsibility, and the process should be just as serious. People deserve a fair opportunity to demonstrate that they have changed, but public safety must remain at the center of every decision. Any system for restoring firearm rights should be thorough, individualized, and based on the full record. Not rushed, automatic, or based on incomplete information. We can recognize the importance of constitutional rights while also recognizing the responsibility to make sure firearms do not end up in the hands of people who pose a serious risk to themselves or others.”
